Hot Rod Nostalgia The first issue of a unique Hot Rod Nostalgia (HRN) "magalog" appeared in late 1994, as an eight-page foldout. Only the outer four pages received four-color printing; the opposite side of this single, folded sheet was printed in more-affordable black and white. The 5000 copies had barely had time to dry before publisher-editor Dave Wallace scooped them up from the printer in November 1994 and transported them directly to the NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion. The publisher knew he had a winner when informed by cell phone that orders for books and videos were arriving even as he drove home from Bakersfield!

More significantly, that modest first edition attracted the interest and respect of dozens of hot-rod artists and authors. So many artisans requested space that Volume Two, published in 1995, was fully 150-percent larger: 20 pages in all — this time, "saddle-stitched" (stapled) like a real magazine or catalog. Again, our staff was overwhelmed by the positive response from readers.

In 1997, HRN Number Three doubled in size to 40 pages, 16 of which were printed in full color. More than 50 artists and 1000 product choices now appeared, along with editorial columns, event coverage, and "minifeatures" starring interesting hot rods and race cars owned by HRN readers. The press run increased to 10,000 copies.

The fourth version of the printed magalog required 60 pages (another 50-percent expansion!), 28 in color. To meet increased demand, 15,000 copies were printed. Some 1600 quality collectibles and nearly 100 different artists came on board. Moreover, expanded editorial sections included comprehensive coverage of nostalgia events; a previously unpublished comic strip by legendary Drag Cartoons founder Pete Millar; and a feature story about southern California drag-strip photographer Jere Alhadeff, who describes some of his favorite "Photos By Jere." These and other editorial features are now available online, as well.

Wallace, who began writing weekly Drag News reports from San Fernando Raceway in 1964, subsequently held staff positions at Lions Drag Strip (1968-69); the Rod Shop of Beltsville, Md. (1972-73); Orange County International Raceway (1973-75); Drag News (1975-77); Hot Rod magazine (1977-80); and Petersen's Drag Racing magazine (1984-88).
